The iPad is a remarkable creation tool, and how wonderful it would be to put this tool in the hands of my students! Digital storytelling activities teach writing and technology skills, engage reluctant writers and encourage students to think about the audience as part of the process. Across the curriculum areas, digital storytelling apps provide students the opportunity to capture their voice through multimedia and to connect with a wider or more specific audience. With the added benefits of sound and imagery, digital storytelling is quickly becoming the medium of choice for creators and storytellers. Students can use the variety of iPad apps that are available to tell their stories independently or collaboratively. As they write personal narratives, students will have to consider tone and pacing when adding music and images. Imagine how much more interesting an informational piece about volcanoes may become with the added sound effects of eruptions or an intense musical composition to accompany the images of lava oozing down a mountain. With your support, my students will evolve from being consumers of technology to creators, and their reluctance for writing will naturally turn to excitement.
