I work in a junior high and elementary school setting with students who have a whole spectrum of difficulties with social skills. Students in my classes struggle with such disabilities as fetal alcohol syndrome, autism, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression. In both the elementary and junior high I work in, many of our students have only emerging skills in problem solving, making friends, motivation, and executive functioning skills such as initiating a task, working memory, organization, the ability to monitor time and recognize expressions to determine others' motivations. I have witnessed the negative results when students, particularly in math, do not have the executive functioning abilities to perform math skills at a consistent level.
