These books will help the students in my classroom grow into fluent readers and avid learners. Sadly, our classroom library is lacking books in the primary which is where the majority of these 2nd grade readers are at this moment. Most of my scholars this year read between a 1st grade and 2nd grade level and our classroom library mostly consists of books in the 3rd grade reading level and higher. Research has proven that when students read books at their independent reading level, they continue to read more, therefore improving their phonics abilities, decoding skills, fluency, and comprehension. And quite the opposite is true as well: they stop reading when books are above their reading level resulting in a plateau of their learning or worse, regression.
