My middle school students in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania are intelligent, curious, hardworking students who are trying to compete for acceptance to Philadelphia's top high schools. They have the passion, but lack the resources to make them truly competitive. They live in one of Philadelphia's poorest neighborhoods and have attended poor performing, violent schools their whole life. Last year was year 1 of a charter turnaround program at our school. The focus was changing the environment to one that was safe. We achieved this and my 7th graders (now 8th graders) saw significant improvement on their national test scores (a 13% increase in proficient scores.) This year we must concentrate on the academic piece, and we need technology in our classrooms to do this.
