My student population is almost 100% English Language Learners. Therefore they need real world, hands on experience to really make the learning come to life for them. Reading from a book will never help them learn to implement their knowledge in a real world context and they will most likely forget what they read shortly after. However, with these Science supplies I will be able to bring the reading to life with hands on experiences and real world challenges that help promote long term learning and language acquisition. Many of these materials align with my curriculum, so I can use these supplies to enrich my lessons. The science tubs offered through Lakeshore has a tub for each science subject covered in our 4th grade curriculum which ensures that my students will have meaningful science experiments throughout the entire school year. Here is the description offered by Lakeshore to give you the full details of all you will be helping these students achieve: "Students conduct lots of fascinating experiments—and explore the scientific process in action! Our tubs each include 8 experiment cards with involving activities based on national science standards. Plus, you get tons of materials to complete each experiment and explore concepts in depth—from microscopes, pulleys and 3-D models to fun flip books, vocabulary cards and full-color charts that make key concepts easy to grasp!" Along side our regular curriculum I would also like to help my students explore real world STEM challenges to help create a classroom of critical thinkers with the Real World Challenge kit. Students will be able to "Construct an earthquake-safe structure, design a robotic hand that can pick up a ball…and engineer a filter that purifies water!"
