Flexible classroom seating, such as trapezoid tables, gives students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, helps them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. It also supports the ever changing seating arrangement that teachers need to work with different groups throughout the day. I feel that one of the most important reasons to offer flexible seating can not be measured on paper, but you can feel it! The student-choice benefit behind flexible seating is that it helps students become more self-aware of what types of seating and environment helps them learn best. And, of course they are empowered by the opportunity to have choices. When you have this sort of energy in each room then you have a destination building for students and staff! A place where students and staff wake up each morning thinking and saying we GET to go there, not we HAVE to go! The real benefit when you create this type of environment is that students are engaged, behavior issues are minimal, learning is happening and academic scores are improving! Imagine all of this happening along with creating and fostering lifelong healthy habits that kids will take with throughout their entire lives! That is what our 21 century learners need today to be successful adults.
