My students are amazing, they are hard working, they lead the classroom in a democratic style, where the focus is student driven. Recently my school has seen an influx of African American students, which has highlighted the achievement gap that exists between our Caucasian and African American students. The literature that we have available at my school and through the district is very Euro-centric in nature, creating a feeling of exclusion for the African American students. If we could incorporate a broader base for the literature it would go a long way towards closing the achievement gap, helping to bring forwards topics for students to use in their critical thinking that will spark intrigue and discussion, which will translate into their writing skills and enhance their reading abilities.
