My school celebrates and encourages our students' sense of pride in themselves, their community and the world around them. My students are a racially and ethnically diverse bunch in a low income, urban setting. While they are talented and enthusiastic about art, they tend to be hard on themselves when an assignment doesn't go as planned. " I can't draw it" or "yours looks better than mine" are common cries of frustration and low self-esteem. Regardless, I encourage them to continue embracing the successful things in their work while learning from their mistakes!
