My school is located in the middle of a downtown metropolitan area. As such, I have a highly multicultural classroom: roughly 80% of my students are Chinese, 5% Vietnamese, 5% from various African countries including refugee families from Eritrea and Ethiopia, 2-5% Yemeni, and 2-5% Latino and African American. My school is poorly funded and lacks basic educational resources: we have books that are outdated, desks that barely stand, computers that hardly run, and no science lab, just to run off a few things we are lacking. Despite this great disadvantage, my students outperform most other students in the area by simply working harder than them. And even though my school does not allow recess nor any enrichment programs such as art and music, my students come with a positive attitude everyday, work diligently on their assignments, and rarely complain. Evidence for this is found in that 5 of my students received perfect STAR scores, while none of my students scored below proficient.
