"Seedfolks" is the wonderful story of a group of immigrant and poor children and adults who come together and plant a community garden in a city where there isn't much nature or community. The setting of "Seedfolks" is very much like where my students live: an area of high poverty, crime, and lack of connection between neighbors. "Seedfolks" is a perfect book to help my students learn about community and human interaction as they come to our sixth grade (junior high) from three separate elementary schools. The story shows how people from all different cultures can overcome their preconceived notions of one another and make something together. The story is well-written and has numerous language arts skills that can be taught as children enjoy the story. Some of these skills include: simile and metaphor, context clues, vocabulary, and foreshadowing.
