Not many people can be creative with fish waste...but Five Points' students can! Science students are in the beginnings of the launch of an aquaponics' program. So, what is aquaponics? Aquaponics is the process of using fish excrement to fertilize plants. Water is fed through a system which breaks down the fishes’ excretions into nitrates and nitrites, which are nutrients for the plants. So there’s no need to buy extra food for the fish. Students are ready to start growing fish and plants. However, pumps, grow lights, and seedlings are needed to get this project up and moving. We currently have one tank but it is not equipped with the needed pump and grow light to sustain the fish and plants. Our goal is to have three tanks that are capable of sustaining life for fish and plants. Seeing how the fish and plants are dependent upon each other for survival helps students to see the interconnections of life and how resources can be utilized in the most efficient matter. Funding of this project will provide students with real engineering and scientific challenges as well as an opportunity to practice real world science.
