My students are from every background you can imagine - from first generation Vietnamese-American to ninth generation European-American; from government-assisted free and reduced lunch to a PCC-fueled feast every day; from despising books to loving them more than talking. They are inquisitive and insistent, diligent and distractible. They are ready to learn, but we need your help! Eighth graders these days love science fiction and fantasy like Steelheart, realistic fiction and anything by John Green, the graphic art of Bone and Naruto, and on and on and on. Having an abundance of books not just available, but in front of them at every corner is one of the most effective ways to develop literacy.
