Last summer, our classrooms were modernized and we packed everything up to be stored during construction. When our items were returned, some of our shelves and shelf brackets from decades-old shelves were missing, removing four shelves we had previously used to display books. Though we made it through the past school year by improvising with what we had, we noticed that because we didn't have the room to display our extensive classroom library in accessible, kid-friendly areas, students had a harder time finding "just right" books for themselves. With these bookshelves and bench, each of our students will be able to independently find and enjoy interesting books at his or her own reading level. Often the combination of budding reading skills and the perfect book will "hook" a second grader on reading. Developing this love for reading is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. With this new furniture, students will be able to not only access books, but also have a warm and inviting space to grow their love of reading.
