Somersworth, New Hampshire, has a per capita income almost 30% less than the average for the state. 11.3% of Somersworth residents are living in poverty and unemployment in the city has doubled in 4 years to 6.3%! Somersworth has the third highest number of families receiving fuel assistance in Strafford County, and 52.25% of students receive free or reduced lunch! Our middle school is host to over 400 students, with more than half unable to receive adequate nutrition and hydration. My team (2 homerooms) consists of 50-55 students each year. They are 7th grade students (12-13 years old) who are sweet and eager to learn! Many of them come from very low income families, often attending school in dirty clothes or hungry from the night before. Unfortunately the district grant for fresh vegetables/fruit applies to the elementary schools only. Beyond that, water is offered from limited water fountains. Students are constantly hungry/thirsty throughout the day, which makes learning hard!
