I have been teaching in an early childhood classroom for six years and the one thing that stands out is that our young learners love and need to move! Not all little learners are comfortable sitting criss-cross applesauce or in a stiff wooden chair throughout their school day. Some might be more comfortable standing, kneeling, bouncing, wobbling, or rocking. Being comfortable will allow the student to stay vested in tasks, and create positive behavior. Flexible seating will create a more comfortable learning environment that helps students be their best learning selves. I will be using the flexible seating at my Teacher Table, where I meet with a small group of kids while the other children are working around the room. My kids know and love this spot where we talk, read, and practice skills together in a smaller group setting. With a larger class size, it is often difficult for students to focus. The flexible seating will encourage them to focus and accommodate the students learning styles and maximize their success.
