Many of the students in my Theatre I class have never stepped into a theatre. Since COVID 19 quarantine, they are struggling with creating characters physically and vocally. They are uncomfortable getting up in front of others and are struggling with sharing their "instrument", which for an actor is their body (thorough movement) and voice. Masks use in Commedia Dell'Arte help students who are self-conscious create characters using specific traditional physical and vocal characteristics. With the mask students are able to "hide" in the mask in a sense creating characters who are NOT them. They are able to step into the world of a character without feeling self conscious, because the mask helps them become someone else. Students will use neutral mask bases and create commedia masks with plaster bandage, glue, paint, and clay and other paper mache' materials. When masks are created, the students will create and present "lazzi" and scenes using their self-made traditional Commedia Dell'Arte masks. With the neutral mask and paper mache' materials they will be able to create a traditional mask for one of the characters and use the traditional characteristics to convey meaning in improvised scenes. (TH:Pr6.1.HSII.a) The Mask in Commedia Dell'Arte practice gives students an opportunity to expand their acting skills by expressing through the body and voice, not the face, using traditional Commedia acting techniques and specific physicalites to create characters. Commedia will help student get more physically and vocally comfortable in their own skin "behind the mask" and give them the ability to create strong, believable characters. (TH:Pr5.1.HSI.a)
