"Some lessons can't be taught, they have to be learned. " - Jody Peculate. My incoming sixth graders come from low-income neighborhoods. They lack not only the essential skills, but the confidence needed to master sixth grade Common Core standards. Looking at their data, 61% are currently slated to receive a score less than 18 on their ACT. According to their Learner Profiles many of them identify themselves as strong tactile learners. They may appear unmotivated but many of them simply have not been given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of concepts and mastery of skills through the way that they learn best, through physically manipulating materials in a way that engages critical parts of their brain ensuring they know how they know they are truly "learning."
