The Montessori philosophy emphasizes strengthening the tenants of concentration, cooperation, independence and order as a basis for all learning. Helping young children develop these fundamental skills equips them for success in school and in life. Choice, individualization, hands-on learning experiences and sensitivity to individual needs are all significant considerations in setting students up for success in school. Flexible seating will make learning fun and provide additional options for students with kinesthetic learning styles, special needs and varying abilities to maximize their learning potential in the most comfortable way possible. All students will have the opportunity to experience the most comfortable options to practice their skills while working at tables and on the floor. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. Additionally, children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. It’s no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. An academic paper by Matthew T. Mahar, et al, found that simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, too. Flexible seating options will help me provide an optimal learning environment that addresses and facilitates children's need to move, have a sense of choice, build and participate in community and seize opportunities for collaboration and achieve success.
