Our school is a 7-12 community school in an urban setting. We are considered high-poverty, and we serve a diverse student population. In addition to poverty, many of our students face other obstacles beyond their control. As a community school, we provide a number of essential social services to assist our students and their families. Our students all receive breakfast, lunch, and a healthy mid-morning snack, and supper is available to those who participate in our popular after-school program, the "Hub." We have a clinic and mental health services on site in addition to several full-time counselors and social workers. Five of our eighth grade classes are inclusion classes that are team-taught by a general education teacher and an inclusion teacher. Despite some of their issues outside school, we have a number of students who show up every day, ready to learn. One of the most important things we can do for them is help them to become better readers.
