In fifth grade, developing an understanding of equivalent fractions and decimals establishes the foundation for countless future math concepts. Not only are fractional concepts necessary for skills taught later in school, but they are also essential for understanding everyday transactions in the grocery store, the mall, workplaces, etc. Fraction manipulatives and number lines provide students with the opportunity to visualize fraction, decimal, and percentage equivalencies in a fun and interactive way. While I love to introduce equivalent fractions with giant chocolate bars--this (unfortunately) is not an option for everyday learning. That's where fraction visuals come into play! By donating to our project, you will allow these hardworking STEM scholars to build conceptual skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Especially because many of my students speak English as a second language, providing visual learning opportunities makes way for significantly more growth and development of concepts that are initially confusing. Furthermore, the addition of headphones in our classroom will permit my students to engage in rigorous learning on their Chromebooks while I pull small student groups for intervention. A wide variety of fun online education programs exist that provide instructional videos and opportunities for applied practice. As I conduct small group instruction, these headphones will allow my students to continue to learn, grow, and have fun!
