My students are 8th graders who come from traditionally low-income communities. My students are driven and work very hard to succeed every day both in and out of school. They know what it takes to be successful in high school and then to and through college, and are excited to get there. Although dedicated students, some of them are far below where they need to be, academically, in order to succeed in higher education. They come to school for nine hours a day, sometimes longer, in order to bridge that gap and compete with their peers who come from more affluent backgrounds. One of the major components in closing this gap is their reading levels and how well they can understand and analyze text. Because of this, they (and myself) really emphasize their reading and the joy of reading.
