Our elementary school is a Title One, Bilingual school, with a large English as a Second Language population. I am a second grade Math/Science/Social Studies teacher. I teach about 22 students in the morning, then switch with my partner teacher and teach 22 different students in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the students must share desks and this can be an organizational disaster. The desks are overflowing with instructional materials and supplies. An over the chair or behind the chair storage/organizer would be helpful in keeping these materials organized and separated. During Math and Science instruction, we do many activities that are hands-on and require cutting and gluing. So often my students will need glue sticks and crayons to complete a project but because so many students are low income, they must share with a partner or borrow from the teacher. I would love for every student to have basic school supplies such as pencils, crayons and glue sticks that will last the entire school year. These supplies will create a more equitable learning environment and allow students to focus on other areas of need rather than worrying about supplies Last year, we started the year with two electric pencil sharpeners, one for regular pencils and one for colored pencils. Needless to say, we ended the year with two broken pencil sharpeners and are in desperate need of a new one.
