Located in an urban community, my school enrolls 1000+ students, grades 6-8. We have a very diverse population of ethnic backgrounds; 50% Hispanic, 32% white, 12% African-American, and 6% Asian/other. Of our entire school enrollment, 464 students are identified as socio-economically disadvantaged. Over 400 students participate in one of four string orchestras or four concert bands (every ensemble is curricular and is ability-based). About 50% of all music students use a school instrument, and about one-third takes private lessons outside of the school day. Student musicians at my school are recognized as high achievers and are committed to their academic learning. They are often viewed as leaders by their peers and teachers alike. While many of our music families are not able to support their child with supplemental instruction or materials, they recognize the value and importance of music being a part of the basic academic curriculum.
