Research shows that students learn by doing, and in my classroom I make every effort to support this. The Sphero robots I have requested teach students physical science principals and coding skills in a fun and kinesthetic manner. Coding is the great equalizer. If a student can code, he or she is not only highly employable but considered highly skilled, regardless of his or her background or economic status. The Sphero robots present a fun and effective way to learn coding. For example, as these spherical robotics zip around the classroom, they are under the control of student pilots. However, these robots will not move if their pilot does not possess a least a rudimentary understanding of coding. Fortunately, the Sphero platform offers a variety of ways to learn coding, ranging from basic to advanced. Also students can explore and understand motion, friction, speed and velocity as they send their robots flying off launch ramps. Even the basic task of charging these robots presents a teachable moment - enabling students to learn about electrons and circuitry.
