My students need life experiences to be able to make connections to new ideas. I am increasingly surprised at vocabulary that is unfamiliar to them. Safari West takes children on an amazing journey of the safari right in our own backyard, so they can experience the world in a way that supports them in reading and writing. With an expanded world view and vocabulary, my students become better writers and readers who can better access our curriculum and have greater achievement in meeting grade level standards. Our field trips parlay into process writing that we can do together. Having experiences together enables me to provide many scaffolded supports that will support all of my writers.
