My 4th grade students began the year listing Cat in The Hat and Green Eggs and Ham as their favorite books. They never had access to literacy or a reading mentor. They never had the experience of interacting with literature and allowing it to take them places they have never been before. Through Reader's Workshop this year my students have built stamina and now have an internal drive to build literacy skills. Their favorite book lists now include Maniac Magee, Holes, Edward Tulane, and Frindle. With this MP3 listening center these students will continue to interact with text. They will hear the voices of their friends and teachers. They will hear what fluency sounds like and connect to the text more easily.
