I teach at a large suburban high school with a rapidly changing population. Increasingly more students come to us with limited English proficiency. As our demographics change, we have sought to address the needs of our students by beginning an AVID program. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program that works to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness. My school began working with the AVID program two years ago, and most of our AVID students speak English as a second-language. Their goal as AVID students is to attend a four-year university; many will be the first in their families to do so. In the AVID classroom, we work on the "soft" skills of school that will help students succeed at college. Special emphasis is placed on organization, writing, discussion, and speaking skills. There will be four AVID classes offered in the 2014-2015 school year.
