Mary Todd Elementary serves students who live in one of the most dangerous sections in our area. Due to the low income levels of our parents and guardians, all of our students are now receiving free breakfast and lunch. Because my kids live in high generational poverty, their life experiences are very limited. Most of them have never seen the world outside of their neighborhoods. Some of them are the primary care givers to younger siblings while their parents are at their jobs, trying to make ends meet. I work with gifted and high ability students who have real potential to break the poverty cycle in their families. By challenging them at their intellectual level and exposing them to new ideas and ways of thinking, I am trying to instill a strong work ethic in them and to help them become lifelong learners. My students don't have a lot of books at home, so they are thrilled when presented and entrusted with their very own copies during class. What a treasure new books are!
