My students are amazing! Many of them are newcomers and they are simultaneously learning three languages. The majority of my students are the first in their family to go to school. There are so many negative things that happen in the neighborhood around the school that my students know what odds they are up against. You turn the corner from the campus and the streets are riddled with drugs and gangs. What helps my students get ahead and push themselves forward is the understanding that education is a means to an end. They want a better life for themselves and their family. My school is a low income, high risk Title 1 school in Oakland's Fruitvale District with 100% of our families qualifying for free lunch. Since our families are considered low income our students don't always have all of the resources available to help them succeed in school. That is where your help is greatly needed!
