I start art lessons with a read aloud that relates to the art activity and/or the children's lives. I am asking for books to teach the importance of empathy, optimism, perseverance, and resilience to my students. This year I have read Leonardo the Terrible Monster that the children loved. The book concludes with the monster befriending a boy with no friends. Helping others is beginning to be a theme for the students. I would like more books to approach social literacy in imaginative and engaging ways. I would like to weave lessons in social literacy through the culture of the art room so the children can begin to make them their own. I began this reading theme because on a daily basis I see the need for help in navigating the waters of relationships. As the little artists cut, glue, paint, balance and construct they share their thoughts and insights on their lives and the world. However, sometimes those words can lead to disagreement and hurt feelings. And for some students the act of creating in a group can lead to feelings of vulnerbility and inadequacy. The read alouds can begin to help the children. As written about by Daniel Goleman the largest indicator of success in life is emotional intelligence. Schools teach academics but not the noncognitive skills, the skills for emotional literacy. Armed with those skills the students can learn better, live better in the pursuit of happy successful lives.
