I have an amazing group of students, from very diverse backgrounds, both racially and socioeconomically (many sign up for a fee waiver from the state to reduce the cost of the Advanced Placement (AP) exam fee). They are taking an AP class - many for the first time - yet have had zero formal prior training or coursework (this class is presently our first-year class). It always astounds me how so many students with little-to-no prior training in programming or abstract thinking overcome their struggles, meet the demands placed upon them, and perform so incredibly on their AP exam in May. Every year, so many of these kids do such an amazing job. What's also special is that many of my students whom never would have thought to major in anything Computer Science-related end up falling in love with CS and major in CS, game-design, or some form of engineering. It's remarkable!
