My 2nd and 3rd graders this year are going to experience a hands-on unit with pianos. Many students in my school likely will not be able to afford any kind of private music lessons, but the piano is an important foundation to learning any instrument. I wanted a way to bring learning musical instruments in a real way to my students. Pianos are the most engaging way to teach music literacy and musical concepts! My students are always asking to experiment on the one big piano I have in my room, but it is impossible to give any meaningful instruction to a class of students with just one piano. These instruments also illustrate so many concepts that I already teach my students, like melody and harmony, so they would be a valuable addition to my classroom.
