I am a K-6 STEM teacher at a Title 1 school with 75% receiving free and reduced lunch and 80% English Language Learners. Many of our students are homeless, come form single parent families and live day by day. School is their refuge and chance for future success. My STEM position is a new position with a new classroom. The class was empty when I moved in and I have been working diligently to get materials and supplies to provide dynamic science lessons that help foster student learning. The class focuses on engineering (building and design). Many supplies are needed to meet the needs of the 1048 students I teach. I have already spent over $300 of my own monies this year to purchase supplies. Although the school was able to supply me with some funds for purchasing supplies, they were very limited due to the fact that our student count went down this year and our school lost almost $100,000 in federal funds. They do not have money to allocate any more funds to the classrooms.
