My students are awesome! I teach in an urban school that attracts students from all over the city. My classes are populated by a microcosm of Denver. I work with kids from places of privilege and a large majority that are on free/reduced lunch. Some of my students are homeless, some are from families with several vacation homes. Despite the differences in economic backgrounds, race, and achievement, my students and I work together to build a respectful and safe learning environment that values reading. My students don't have enough books! I am responsible for building and maintain my own classroom library and our school library is lacking in popular titles and important pieces of literature. Obviously I have limited funds to work with, but I do strive to seek out books that students want to read. The fact that many of my popular titles disappear is one that I take as a compliment (a stolen book is a read book). Students need many different book choices.
