I am the college & career counselor and a social science teacher for a inner city high school in Northern California. We have five small learning communities at our school. Throughout the school year, I plan college and career opportunities and activities for our students. Our goal is to prevent high risk students from dropping out of school and becoming first generation college students by making learning relevant to them. The SLCs try to do this by integrating cross curriculum projects that utilize the industry skills the students learn in their career technical elective classes. At the same time, we try to emulate a professional setting and environment. We believe that both of these techniques will help prepare our students for college and life after high school. The majority of the students at our school are English language learners, minorities and first generation college students.
