My students will read the full text of this inspiring memoir and engage in Socratic Seminars around the major themes of this text. In history classes, students usually learn about the Civil Rights Movement by studying the actions and writings of great men. This text will allow students to learn about the modern Civil Rights Movement from the female and grass roots lenses. They will gain a knowledge of the importance of grass roots organizing and the efforts of women in securing greater civil and human rights for African Americans.
