The population of children that I teach are diagnosed with Autism and fall within the moderate to severe developmentally disabled. They range from verbal to non verbal. Some students can communicate their basic wants and needs, while others' require pictorial cues as well as physical prompting to communicate their needs. These cues are a prerequisite for teaching beginning- speaking, reading, and writing skills. In addition,my students present with sensory integration difficulty. They have difficulty controlling their body movements as they seek sensory input all day long.I have observed them sitting on a sensory cushion seat, significantly increasing their attention. Our program is language based and focuses on teaching and enhancing language and communication in all areas of the school curriculum.
