My class is comprised of nineteen 4th- and 5th-grade students. It is a self-contained general education setting, so the students are with each other all day for every subject. It is similar to an old-fashioned one-room school house at times. The ideology is to provide the opportunity for the students to obtain a wider range of knowledge. This type of setting also lends itself quite well to peer-tutoring. We are located in a rural community of high poverty level in the southern U.S. The characteristic that impresses me the most about this particular group is their kindness toward each other. In a nation where bullying is such an issue, it amazes me to see this group of kids applaud each other for their accomplishments, put an arm around a peer feeling sad, or offer an extra quarter to buy a snack from the vending machine.
