My twenty-five first graders are all English language learners, with Chinese as their native language. Most of these students come from families that do not speak English, can provide them with limited academic support, and come from low-income families. Many of these students do not have the opportunities to hear stories in English and have very limited access to books. About 70% of the students in my school are low income, which makes it difficult for parents to contribute to the cost of purchasing new books for the school.
