Many of my students have reading comprehension and written expression disabilities, making it very difficult to enjoy and even tolerate novel reading. Percy Jackson is a book about a child with a disability, like my students, who proves you can become anything you want to be (including a hero who saves the world) with nerve and drive. My students really connect with the excitement of the story and Percy’s journey to accept his “gifts.” Having a novel they really enjoy, with supplementary materials to help them along the way, will turn reading into a fun activity and a strength, rather than a weakness
