As the only middle school in our town, we have kids from every advantage and disadvantage imaginable. In the same room, there is a child who is living an amazingly blessed life to the child living in a home with no power and little to eat. Many are struggling to be motivated to learn because they have poor role models. I feel like my first task is to make them feel safe and loved. I then focus on helping them see their potential and gifts and abilities. Finally, I can teach them math. It's about educating the whole child, emotionally and academically. It's a daily battle that can be taxing, but I wouldn't change it for anything.
