What appealed to me most about teaching at the school in which I am employed is the diversity of the children. We are located in Southeast Missouri in a median sized city. The school is an award winning School Wide Positive Behavior Support school. We recognize, teach, and reward children for positive behaviors. As a result, our discipline referrals have reduced. When behavior improves in the classroom, learning improves. In the district, this school has the second highest number of English Language Learning (ELL) students. My personal experience is the number of ELL students in my classroom grows each year. We have an ELL teacher, but the classroom teachers need more curriculum and strategies to help ELL students. My students are lively, happy, and love learning. They are very engaged when I read to them and make many connections to the books. We learn with developmentally appropriate songs, cooperative learning strategies, technology, and hands on activities. It is a fun adventure!
