In our reading classrooms today, students have many opportunities to read the latest and greatest novels. However, they don't always know where some of the themes and ideas first came from, this is where reading the classics will come in. Reading the classics helps students develop an appreciation for language while challenging them with vocabulary that is unfamiliar. The classics expose students to good writing and provide opportunities to look critically at the themes that have survived the ages. By having access to these novels, I hope to create a unit that will look at the commonalities within the novels while focusing on vocabulary that is specific to each novel set. The ability and the opportunity for my students to read a "great book" is one that I would love to share with them. This unit would provide that opportunity and allow us to explore the past while shaping their literary futures.
