My students have beautiful goals and dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers, and nurses. The majority of them are African American, Haitian, and Hispanic. These students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, some with very difficult living situations. One of my classes is a sheltered English Language Learner course where students are making incredible gains in math. My students need interactive lessons to better their understanding but also to meet their individual learning styles. Our school vision is one that wants our students to graduate with pride and confidence, prepared to succeed in their post-secondary endeavors and become inquiring, lifelong learners and productive, global citizens. In order to achieve this, my students need to feel valued and need to have opportunities to practice, make mistakes, and learn from those mistakes. This way, they can take the personal lessons they have learned when they graduate and enter the real world.
