Our very young 4 and 5 year old students are going to help create a bug's eye view of the world as they magically "shrink" from their actual size - to explore an environment of worm tunnels and soil chambers. Our murals will reveal soil to be a home of an incredible diversity of living things. Investigations will help these young children see how life above ground connects to life below. They will get a whole new perspective on how plant roots, seeds and fungus find nourishment amidst the soil. They will also help create the hidden world of earwigs, moles, and hatching snail eggs. Frances Starms is in a very urban area, yet we plan to start introducing our young learners with the natural world right in our front yard - in our butterfly garden. We'd like to get our students outdoors and engaged in learning about the environment, and transform that learning into our Underground Community Mural Project and our All-School Art Book that will showcase their learning.
