Every year we offer a motivational program called "Girls on the Run". It is a program that promotes healthy lifestyles, exercise, self confidence and self esteem for young girls. The program is offered to girls in grades 3, 4 & 5. Several staff and community volunteers meet with the girls on a weekly basis and discuss topics around health, well-being, education, friendships and other issues that today's young girls face and then we run. Although the program is very successful, every year we are faced with the girls not having proper running shoes. So we beg, borrow from staff and our close closet, but we feel if the girls had proper footwear - they would be able to preform better and be safe. We provide t-shirts for all the girls and new sneakers would make them feel like a real team. Most of the girls who participate in this program are new to this country and the skills they acquire will make them successful not only at school, but also in their every day lives. The group meets weekly and at the end of the 10 weeks, there is a culminating 5K race with other schools that offer the program. The venue is usually at a large track outside of the city. This is an exciting day for our girls, they get to meet other girls from all over the state of Maine and they run together. Although the program does focus on building healthy life skills and exercise by running, it also builds meaningful friendships between the girls and the staff.
