My students will fall in love with literature, but they need an opportunity to see themselves in the material they are reading. This novel is moving, hilarious, and eye-opening. It's about the struggles many students face. They can really find themselves through this book. The character in this novel face challenges like many of my students. The protagonist grew up in a tough barrio in Fresno, California and is Latinx. Many students will be able to relate to the text and they will be expected to complete dialectical journals throughout their reading. Ultimately, their project will culminate in an identity project where students express their ideas and thoughts about their own identity and how it is shaped by their environment.
