My students come from an inner city area, with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Our class has stayed as one unit throughout their education, and so are truly a family. We take risks, explore, share stories and ask questions. My fifth graders are piloting for the first time in our school's history a Capstone project, related to ending the School to Prison Pipeline. Our classroom uses history and current events to inspire change and bring awareness to important issues. My fourth grade class just completed a unit on migrant workers and the use of child labor, learning about how Cesar Chavez helped to create new laws through nonviolence. While students are inspired and inspiring learners, they are lacking the essential classroom supplies needed to produce their assignments, take notes, and explore. While I was able to purchase a set of classroom texts for my fifth graders, my fourth grade class would greatly benefit from this same experience. "Frindle" would be a great start!
