I work in a school with a high rate of poverty and English language learners. Over 65% of our student are on a free or reduced price meal program. Our school is devoted to providing a safe and loving environment for our kids as well as high quality instruction. We do have a strict budget however, so printing is somewhat limited. Color printing is non-existent. My students are at a disadvantage when it comes to quality, real life experiences. They lack the advantages of going places like the beach, the zoo, and museums. These kinds of experiences not only help children to understand the world, they help to increase vocabulary. My students are thrilled and enthusiastic when I am able to provide them with real life images of things we are learning about. Some of the topics I teach are ocean life, insects, rocks and minerals, communities, and Lunar New Year. 2nd graders love these topics and learn so much more when they are able to view, handle and discuss real life images of these topics.
