At my school, all students must take AP English Language. However, our district will not provide a textbook for AP classes, leaving us to constantly scramble to find readings. Moreover, we do not have any class sets of non-fiction books and non-fiction is the core of AP English Language. Our students are creative, critical thinkers who strive for social justice even though many of them have experienced immense inequalities. Many of our students are immigrants who have to fight to learn a new language and succeed in a society that does not always welcome them. Over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite these obstacles, our students have been incredibly successful in winning prestigious scholarships and attending renowned universities. They are truly an inspiration.
